The PS5 update corrects one of the console's most egregious flaws.

PS5

Sony's PlayStation 5 has been available for more than eight months. There have been a few system software changes since then, although they have all been small. The first significant upgrade is being rolled out to beta testers this week. Support for M.2 SSD drives is without a doubt the most notable feature of the upgrade. At launch, there was no way to expand the console's SSD capacity. However, with this upgrade, M.2 SSD drives will be inserted into the PS5's expansion port. Of course, as beta testers discovered, that isn't the only highlight of the upgrade.

Video game controllers have grown to the point where they require their own software updates. DualSense on the PS5 is no exception. The problem is that the only time you can update your controllers on your PS5 is when you first turn it on. When the prompt displays, you can mistakenly cancel it. You'll have to wait another 24 hours for it to resurface if you do. It's an odd system.

Thankfully, according to The Verge, Sony appears to have addressed this issue with the update. There is a new mechanism to update the DualSense controller with the beta 2.0 software. You should see a new option called Wireless Controller Device Software if you go to Settings > Accessories > Controllers. It will inform you what version of software your controller is running and, if one is available, will allow you to install it. In addition, the prompts will continue to show.

The PS5 beta 2.0 update contains everything else.

The PS5 interface is still in need of improvement, but the controller update setting is an excellent place to start. The option to rearrange the controls in the control centre at the bottom of the screen is another handy feature in beta 2.0. Sony made it more difficult to reach the PS5's power controls for whatever reason, but this should eliminate at least one of the extra steps.

Other new features include the ability to enable 3D audio for your TV speakers, separate iconography for PS5 and PS4 versions of games, a trophy tracker that allows you to track up to five trophies per game, and enhanced Library menu navigation.

The PS5 beta update was released on Thursday, so it may take some time to reach the general public. On the PlayStation website, you can sign up for the PS5 system software beta program.
